Behind the Blog, Learn

Setting Realistic 2018 Resolutions

It’s a little bittersweet saying farewell to 2017 because it gave me so many beautiful and meaningful memories. But more importantly, there were so many lessons that life brought last year. I’m dreaming even bigger for my 2018 resolutions – I narrowed it down to five over-arching goals for the entire year after reflecting on last year’s lessons. From these five things, I’ll create smaller actionable tasks each month of the year. (Post on my goal-setting tips coming later this week!) Keep reading to see how I put together my 2018 goals with intention.

1. Keep Learning

There have been quite a few learning curves in business and social media over the last year. With algorithms and social media platforms practically replacing blogs, there have been a lot of changes to adapt to and navigate around. In 2017, I became an avid podcast listener and webinar watcher! I was explaining to Jordan that now if you want to learn something, you turn to your peers on YouTube and iTunes. (I’ve posted about my favorite podcasts here.)

Looking back at last year’s struggles, I put together a list of things that I want to “learn” in 2018. For example, I want to dedicate more time to take my own photos and become proficient in Lightroom. I want to read more business-minded literature and attend conferences with speakers that inspire me.

I also want to learn more about YOU. What are you guys interested in? Am I providing you with content that’s helpful in your everyday life? Am I being intentional when I put together my content calendar? This is the year that I want to really get to know you guys! (I’ll be polling over on IG Stories today to see what kind of content you want to see in 2018!)

2. Discover New Places

2017 was the year that I caught the travel bug! Social media has totally propelled my wanderlust, and I fell in love seeing so many places for the first time last year. I can’t wait to share even more destinations with you in 2018! In fact, I’ve already lined up my January through March travel plans that I’m absolutely thrilled about. Some of these include learning experiences with brands and others are just for the explorer in me. Jordan is also thrilled because he gets to come with me on a few of them 😉

Travel highlights from 2017 in case you missed any of the posts:

A once-in-a-lifetime adventure in La Paz

Falling in LOVE with every street in Charleston

My first all-incusive resort in St. Lucia

An Italian getaway that I’ll never be able to get over

My first real fall in Vermont

And so many more you guys… I just got a rush of gratefulness rush over me as I typed this.

3. Delegate What You Can’t Handle

Delegation has always been a little tough for me because I want to do EVERYTHING myself. Then last year, I realized that – okay, maybe I can’t do all of this stuff by myself and live a normal life. So I added to my little blog team – two fantastic and amazingly patient people. One is my intern, Laiken, who keeps me sane. One is my social media assistant, Scott, who tells me like it is. 2017 was really an experimental phase – baby steps, if you will – to see what I’d be comfortable handing over. It was mostly surface things like helping me sell my gently used clothing or providing reports on social media each week.

I’m excited to meet with them both this week to see what THEY want to learn and take on this year. What can we do better together? One of the things I miss most about my office job has been having coworkers to brainstorm and share ideas with. And I feel like I finally have a little bit of that back now!

Should I do a full post on delegating?

4. Quality Over Quantity

I want to dedicate an ENTIRE post about my thoughts on the current state of blogging, so here’s the abridged version. There were several times last year that I felt unsatisfied with blogging. I felt like I was just churning out mediocre pieces of content to keep up instead of being intentional, being creative. Which is really why I started a blog in the first place – to create. Even if it means less blog posts per week, I want to provide you with BETTER content. Content that’s filled with intention and value that serves YOU. This goes back to #1 – learning more about you guys and what you want to see!

5. Make Time For Family & Friends

I saved this one for last because it really ties into the previous points about learning, delegating and travel that takes me away from home. This year I want to be more present for family and friends. With 2017 being my first full-time year blogging, I devoted most of my time to work. And now that I feel more comfortable with work expectations and  balancing my limitations, I hope to reserve more time for my favorite people! I know Jordan and the dogs will like this one too!

Thank you one more time for allowing me to share my life, my inspirations and my random thoughts with you! I am truly excited and humbled to see what 2018 has in store for us!
