10 Easy October Style Tips

For me (and most people living in the South), October is our first real taste of fall with crisp mornings and chilly nights. We pretend like September is fall, but we all know we are still dressing like it’s summer due to the scorching heat. Now it’s finally time to flip the switch on our closets and pull out all of our favorite fall pieces. To get you excited for a new season of outfits and lots of layering in your future, I’ve partnered up with Nordstrom today to share 10 easy style tips for effortless fall outfits including the perfect outfit to wear this month!

1. Super Versatile Suede

Fall is all about chic leathers, and suede is one of the easiest ways to start wearing texture right now. I’ve seen so many suede pieces made for transitional outfits that are budget-friendly and super versatile. I’m loving the Wayf button-front skirt in today’s post, because you wear it now with lighter tops and booties and later with oversized sweaters and OTK boots. Also loving this suede mini dress from Wayf, and I just picked up this suede ASTR dress that will be so cute layered.

2. Crossbody Cool

This fall look for crossbody bags that will give your transitional outfits a little edge with heavy metal details or bright pops of color. These are the go-to bags for adding interest to all of your fall basics like ponchos and cardigans. I love Rebecca Minkoff for her streetstyle inspired bags that come in a ton of colors and textures.

3. Heavy Metals

Fall is my favorite time to really mix up my jewelry and start playing with metals like gunmetal and different variations of gold. I love that Kendra Scott has even introduced new stones like chocolate druzy that can really amp up your seasonal arm party. I’ve even started seeing pieces from their holiday collection start trickling onto Nordstrom that include more organic shapes and stones.

4. Tie It Up

The major trend right now are pieces that tie – from velvet wrap-around heels, chunky lace-up sweaters to this tie front blouse. Now’s the time to try out this trend before it’s time to bundle up with coats and jackets. It’s a fun little way to show a little bit of skin this fall!

5. Stay Neutral

I realize this is nothing new, but fall’s gorgeous neutral color palette is something to definitely play around with – for example, bust out that white denim and pair with a chunky blush sweater. Or instead of your typical blue jeans, go with a raw edge jean in a gray wash. Use your accessories and beauty products to play up the color.

6. Borrow From The Boys

Menswear is trending again this season, and we’re seeing a lot of updated loafers for women. They’re now available in backless styles, metallic leathers and some feature a chunky rugged sole. Take advantage of this trend in between wearing heels or heeled boots!

7. Streetstyle Influence

One of the first places I go for fall style tips – the streets. Streetstyle tipped me off early to some of the biggest trends this season like bomber jackets. (Don’t miss my full guide to bomber jackets in this post from Sunday!) If you want in on some of my favorite streetstyle inspirations – follow me on Pinterest here for my Outfit Inspirations board!

8. Effortless Hair

One of the biggest trends that I saw in NYC this past fashion week – messy hair. Everyone was rocking the just-got-out-of-bed hair which is a little too much for this Southern girl who has an addiction to the curling wand, but it does have me experimenting with not-so-perfect waves. Tousled effortless hair with an air dry appearance is huge right now. If it’s in a sideways ponytail – even better.

9. Perfect Price Points

Always key when building a new season’s wardrobe or adding to one you’re trying to update, pricing is so important. Fall items like sweaters can have a hefty price tag and all of those blanket scarves can tend to add up – not to mention the price of OTK boots! That’s why I love Nordstrom, because you can search for any of those keywords and items at multiple price points are available suiting anyone’s fall wardrobe budget.

10. Versatility is Key

Look for pieces that you can wear and rewear all season. For example, there were a few sweaters and tunics that I wore so much last year that I had to retire them before even wearing them this year – look for those pieces that you know will get a ton of wear out of to get your max money’s worth. Brands that I love for good quality and versatility all available at Nordstrom: Wayf, Topshop, BP, Free People.
