Dressing up for date night can be tricky on its own, but throw in the element of cooler fall weather and it becomes even more daunting. Autumn might be a season for layering, but I don’t think anyone really wants to bundle up for a night out with their other half, right? Not to mention, there are tons of options to put together an effortless holiday date night outfit beyond a little black dress – just by remixing a few classic staples in your wardrobe.
One of my favorite places to shop for luxe, cozy holiday pieces is Bloomingdales. Plus, C by Bloomingdales, an affordable line of cashmere pieces. Cashmere is hands down one of my favorite materials to wear in the fall whether you’re going apple picking – or headed out for a night on the town. AND through this weekend, you can snag cashmere on sale during the current Bloomingdale’s Sale – $25 off $100 until Sunday 11/11! Keep scrolling for the full look and my favorite pieces.

Cashmere is a more expensive fabric option for the colder season. It not only feels so luxe but keeps you super warm which is why it’s great for date night. It’s rare to find quality cashmere sweaters that are affordable, but there are so many chic styles in the under $200 price range from C by Bloomingdales. Plus you can really take advantage of the lower price during the $25 off $100 sale going on right now. I went with a slightly oversized, funnel neck style in a festive color that would be great for layering over skirts and dresses. This one is perfect for wearing from day to night. (I sized up in this style to be more oversized and to have room for the bump!)
1. Mini Skirt + OTK Boots
It can be hard to get creative with sweaters but remember that they don’t have to be paired with jeans or leggings. I don’t think there is anything more appropriate for a date night look than a dress or skirt. One way to get away with showing a little leg (while staying warm) is pairing a sweater with a mini skirt and over-the-knee boots. Look for suede skirt styles or the always classic fluted mini skirt.
2. Midi Dresses + Booties
One of my favorite ways to take a dress into fall is by layering a sweater over it. When layering sweaters over midi dresses, pay attention to where the sweater hits your body. I typically like to work with cropped pieces or sweaters that hit right around the top of my legs. You can also belt it at the waist if you want to create more shape. When it comes to shoes, booties are as classic as they get for fall. If you plan on doing a little more walking, go with a block or kitten heel for maximum comfort instead of a pump or heel.
Add a Plaid Scarf!
Finally, remember to bring a scarf, which you can always take off – or leave in the car. Longer wrap styles or blanket scarves will give off a dressier and tailored feel, but there are so many other cute styles that would work with an outfit like this one. You can keep it classic in a neutral color or make a statement with a bold Burberry plaid scarf.
And that’s as easy as date night dressing gets in the fall. What are your go-to date night looks?
