November is finally coming to an end, which means the holiday season is just around the corner. For me, that usually comes with an onslaught of cocktail parties, formal get-togethers, and even a few weddings. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve come across so many moments where I’d just gaze off into the closet wondering what to wear when a dress code calls for black tie – and it’s frigid cold outside. While your current dress collection may be bursting with bright and floral dresses, it’s just not going to cut it for the holidays – even with a winter coat layered on top. So, if you’re ready to look nothing short of chic without breaking the bank, be sure to check out the Topshop collection at Nordstrom! Below, I’ve rounded up my favorite occasional dresses for the holiday season.

Winter is the perfect time to swap pastel and colorful dresses for a festive bright RED. With so many iterations available from bow details to plunging necklines and sleeved options, you’ll be able to find versatile options perfect for every holiday occasion. I love how red kinda becomes a neutral color this time of year! You can still add a jewel-toned clutch, a pair of metallic pumps, or sparkly statement earrings without looking over the top for the holidays – and the one in today’s photos is UNDER $70.
When it comes to fabrication, you can do no wrong with a velvet number in the winter. I especially love velvet dresses in bold jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, navy, or mustard. The combo is always eye-catching since it looks so sumptuous and luxe. Velvet wrap dress silhouettes are the most flattering and look gorgeous on everyone.
Sequins are a huge trend this season, and they also happen to be one of my favorite styles to wear for an evening fall wedding or a formal black tie affair. The head-to-toe sparkly option can be subdued by opting for darker colors such as black or navy. Although they can be a huge statement maker, they also look elegant and chic in sequin midi dress or floor grazing lengths.
If you’re looking for a printed option that falls in between casual and black tie, a seasonally-appropriate floral print mini dress will do the trick. Reach for darker muted hues that complement winter’s rich color palette. Details such as a thigh-high slit or ruffles add a playful and romantic touch that’s perfect for a special occasion.
For a little sparkle that’s equal parts romantic, sexy, and chic, a metallic mini dress is essential. Since metallics can sometimes feel like a cliche, try a bold, showstopping number like an asymmetrical style or a bronze or dark silver, which will set you apart from the crowd. Any metallic color dress will be so festive and appropriate for both Christmas and New Years!
Although satin dresses are typically more of a lighter piece, they can work for the holidays with the right color and accessories. For instance, a long sleeve midi dress with sophisticated tailoring looks appropriate for casual events and cocktail events at night. You can also swap booties for patent leather pumps to keep it elevated and classy.
