I have been so excited for the arrival of October as it signifies the return of one of my favorite fall pieces: ponchos (and capes)! Although I’ll always love classic outerwear pieces such as a faux fur coat or a plaid blazer, there’s something about a poncho that I simply adore. So many new styles are hitting the stores, but my most recent obsession has been this one by Marks & Spencer. The mixed plaid and herringbone design is perfect for adding color and texture to your fall and winter outfits.
I have always considered ponchos to be an essential in my wardrobe, but I realize the unique and shapeless silhouette can be tricky to style especially for a date night. So today, I wanted to share a few tips on how to dress up a poncho in a chic and elevated way.

My favorite kind of fall outfits are the ones that make you feel like you’re wrapped up in the coziest blanket, so I love reaching for ponchos in the fall. With jeans and a sweater or tee, ponchos make a great outfit for weekend brunch or scenic drives to the mountains. However, they can also look incredibly chic and sophisticated with the swap of a few key pieces. Here are my tips for dressing up a poncho at night:
1. Pair with tailored silhouettes…
With such strong proportions, it’s important to play with different layering techniques when wearing a poncho. I prefer to style my poncho with tailored silhouettes for the evening. This is usually a solid turtleneck, an a-line mini skirt, or a sweater dress. Either of these items allow you to highlight the poncho as a statement piece. It’s unexpected but still cozy and polished when casually draped over your shoulders.
2. Swap boots for heels…
Ponchos have an intrinsic slouchiness that is often polished out with knee-high riding boots or over-the-knee boots. I find that sleeker boot styles give it a modern twist that’s super wearable during the day. To make it more date night appropriate, switch out your structured boots for a pair of glossy heels. The two tone style of these block heel sandals will make your look all the more premium.
3. Add quirky accessories…
Every detail matters when dressing up a poncho. This blush bucket bag is perfect because of the structure that contrasts against the billowing silhouette. I love that it comes with a removable cross body strap because the shorter top handle will help in creating a dressier look. Accessories don’t stop here. Leave it to a printed beret to channel a bit of Parisian chic.
