The other day, I was trying to count how many times I’ve been to New York City. This past fashion week was my 10th time in the Big Apple – I couldn’t believe it y’all! Needless to say, I’ve learned quite a lot along the way when it comes to NYC airports, public transportation and maneuvering around the city in general after much duress. So I thought that it would be perfect to share my top 3 NYC travel tips in case anyone was planning fall or winter visits this year! (Already planning a return trip for fall!) I’ve teamed up with Sofft on this post because their Somers slip-on sneaker is hands-down my favorite airport shoe! Plus, this year it totally saved my feet in between fashion week shows and meetings!

I always wear my most comfortable shoes to the airport. Plus, nothing is worse than going through airport security and realizing you have laces to untie and that you’re holding up the line. That’s why I love my Somers slip-ons for travel days! (I have them in four colors now… #obsessive) Plus, you never know when you’re going to have to sprint to your connecting flight… that’s my airport luck lately.
Be familiar with your airlines and airport. After flying there so many times, I feel comfortable flying to LaGuardia from New Orleans. It has one of the few direct flights from MSY to NYC. I have also become familiar with the amount of time it takes getting to and from LGA in an Uber or taxi. However, I always Google Map the drive ahead of time on my phone to see current traffic situations.
Give Yourself 30 Minutes to Get Anywhere
Speaking of traffic situations, always allow yourself at least 30 minutes getting across Manhattan unless you’re taking the subway! A lot of times, it feels like I spend the majority of fashion week in the backseat of an Uber. We try to leave appointments and schedule meetings at least 30 minutes apart to allow for cushion room. Somehow we still end up running behind – guess that’s what they mean when they say “in a New York minute!”
On trips that weren’t fashion week related, I did teach myself how to use the subway. With the help of a few apps, it’s really quite simple! Just not as practical if you’re trying to walk down the subway steps in heels and fashion week garb. Try downloading the HopStop app and get familiar with it before you head underground – you’ll lose service down there while on the trains.
Don’t Be Afraid to Walk Around
Exploring the different neighborhoods of Manhattan is a must. You won’t really get to see the personality of the city if you’re stuck in a car or train the entire time. I love taking advantage of any extra time we have to walk around and see as much as I can. I’ve been ten times now and still haven’t seen a LOT of the city! The best days to knock out touristy items are Tuesday-Thursday of course. So plan your activity heavy days for weekdays to avoid the crowds.
Again, comfy light shoes are essential! Packing a shoe like the Sofft Somers will save your feet. I always slip mine on between shows and meetings for grabbing coffee and snacks. Plus, they go with just about everything without looking too casual!
PS. I’m currently working on my full recap of fashion week – coming soon!
